Our Twins: Gasharu - Rwanda, both washed and natural processed
Posted on January 09 2024
A single origin of different processes. In the vein of wanting to bring to you an experiential discovery of coffee, we got these beans in a twin purchase. Purchase a singular pack if you only like washed / natural coffees, but we'd highly encourage you to get them in a pair!
Rwanda - Natural
We've put some tasting notes in our product info this time, hopefully it will be useful in your decision making.
Granted these beans are not super specially processed or rare, we got these beans with a couple of reasons in mind, and thought it would be fun for you too.
- Single origin with different process - what's there not to like?
- You can actually try mixing the beans in a 50:50 ratio and taste to see if you like it! We tried it and it was pretty solid a cup!
- Last but not least, definitely one of the reasons was for us to learn to scale up our roasts from a small batch to a larger batch.
Note: We know many of you are asking for filters - bear with us while we get there! We believe that some beans do better for espresso and others for filter - so we will get there!

Some reviews we have gotten so far on the flavour notes:
From T, our consistent pioneer who feedback to us from time to time, on the natural (but mentions he prefers the washed):
" Cupping: red/purple fruit (red grapes, plum), cane sugar sweetness; medium body & rounded medium acidity. As an espresso (24-26s shot, 1:2 ratio): red currants/plum acidity which is more upfront than in cupping (dominates the cup)"
From S, our newest pioneer who is super precise (thank you!), on the washed:
"Aroma: Light, Roasted, Slightly Nutty, Fruity (Mild - Pear)
Acidity: Light, Pear (Mild)
Body: Light-Medium, Balanced, Tea-like
Sweetness: Light
Aftertaste: Medium, Roasted, Nutty, Tea-like
Clean cup: 4/5"
We sure hope you enjoyed brewing and thinking about the actual flavours you're tasting in you cup! Finally, here's our take on the beans and brew.
Our flavour notes
Natural tasting notes: Sweet and rounds off well, pineapple acidity, honey sweetness, tea-like body, hazelnut nutty finish.
Washed tasting notes: Clean, light mouthfeel, poached pear, kiwi (muted acidity), light and subtle florals with underlying chocolate notes.
We brewed the espresso at the usual target of 1:2 at 18g in, 36-38g out, with a shot timing of 28-30s. Some feedback would be to increase extraction time or volume to experience more florals with the washed. With a few tweaks depending on when you brew the cup, the flavour notes pops!
