5 reasons why the Comb - Barista Hustle's take on the WDT Tool is superior.

The WDT tool that everyone has - but in different shapes & sizes. We’re aware. Time for an upgrade? We use it ourselves and tell you 5 reasons why we think it’s an upgrade - at least from the one we own.

The Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) is a distribution method for espresso making. Using a fine needle or similar tool, the barista stirs the coffee while it sits in the portafilter. A funnel (read: use the Ring!) placed above the portafilter helps prevent spills.

From Barista Hustle's blog post on WDT“The most compelling evidence for the efficacy of WDT is reduction in channelling,” Scott says. “When you use WDT well, you cannot only see a decrease in channelling but all else being equal, your shots should flow a little slower, which is a side effect of decreased channelling.” Channels can be detected by looking at extraction curves. Increased resistance in..."

BH's take on the Weiss Distribution Technique or WDT, is the Comb.

and here's our 5 reasons why - read to the end to hear our person two cents worth.

1. You can decide the needle combination you want

In our own testing, we used 6 on the outer rims and 1 in the middle like the picture above. Don't need to count - there are 25 thoughtfully placed holes for a wide array of needle comb-inations. Not forgetting they provide 30 needles so you can instantly replace any bends or breaks.

A closely packed hexagon or a straight rake both achieve different results. We designed the Comb to suit your style of WDT.

2. The handle is so, so ergonomical.

The hexagonal handle is such a minor detail but just so nice to hold. You have to absolutely try it. The handle is made of soft silicone rubber which is nigh on indestructible and can tolerate any regiment of dish-washing and bar service.

3. You can trust BH to provide precision.

Are you sure what you have is as precise as BH? Read their blogpost on how they have found a Goldilocks Width on exactly how thick the needles should be. Too thick and you leave deep trails in the grinds. Too thin and you don’t get any distribution done. 0.35mm is BH's choice for the best compromise.

4. The needles go straight down

It doesn't flair outwards so when you do your WDT routine, it distributes exactly where you want it to, evenly. The needles are 501 grade stainless steel for flexibility and corrosion resistance.

5. They don't poke

Oh yes, and they don't poke me like the usual. Most WDT tools come with stock standard acupuncture needles which are super sharp. These needles are rounded. No more finger pricks or basket scratches.
